Iron deficiency is a common nutritional issue characterized by low levels of iron in the body, leading to various symptoms and health complications. Proper management, including dietary changes and potential supplementation, is crucial for addressing and preventing iron deficiency.

If you suspect you have low iron levels, it's essential to consult a healthcare professional who can properly diagnose and provide guidance tailored to your specific situation.

Include foods that are naturally rich in iron in your diet. Good dietary sources of iron include lean red meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, beans, lentils, tofu, spinach, kale, broccoli, fortified cereals, and iron-fortified bread and pasta.

2. Iron-Rich Foods

Enhance iron absorption by pairing iron-rich foods with those high in vitamin C. Citrus fruits, berries, kiwi, tomatoes, bell peppers, and leafy greens are excellent sources of vitamin C.

Cooking acidic foods like tomatoes or soups in cast-iron cookware can increase the iron content of the food.

Some substances can inhibit iron absorption. These include coffee, tea, calcium-rich foods, and high-fiber foods. Consider avoiding these or consuming them separately from iron-rich foods.

5. Avoid Iron Inhibitors

If recommended by your healthcare professional, take iron supplements as prescribed. Iron supplements are available over the counter, but the dosage and type of iron supplement should be determined by your healthcare provider.

Iron deficiency can sometimes be caused by underlying conditions or factors that affect iron absorption. Your healthcare provider can evaluate and address any potential underlying causes.
